Earning your day rate

I found this video on this dolly grip blog I’ve been visiting for the past few weeks. O…M…G, dude! And I thought lifting a 500+lb. dolly up two flights of stairs was bad!

I think when you’re a genius, people overlook the fact that you’re kinda nutso.

One of my favorite cinematographers EVER.

Let’s Buy the Warriors

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

I came across this article about Liverpool FC and how their fans are pitching to purchase the football club from its American owners. Apparently, it would require 100,000 fans to put in $10,000 and then the team would be owned collectively by these fans. The article reported that several teams in Spain follow this model, including Barcelona and Real Madrid.

How crazy is that?! I can’t imagine this model working here in the States. I’m interested to see how much stake each of these fan-owners would have in personnel decisions. Imagine if 100,000 fans bought the GS Warriors. There’s already enough discourse about the team’s personnel, how they play, and it’s coach. I can’t imagine the arguments from 100,000 stakeholders. Of course, I’m sure there’s a method to what looks like madness. I tell you one thing, though – I can pretty much guarantee that all 100,000 fan-owners would NOT have given Adonal Foyle that $41 million contract extension.

Be Kind Rewind

What Mos Def and Jack Black do in Be Kind Rewind, Gondry does to his own movie trailer.

Seriously, I need to take a shot of what this guy drinks.

I heart music videos!

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

I do…so much that I actually DVR a show on VH1 called Nocturnal State a couple nights a week so I can watch videos. I usually watch it during my post-wake-up routine. Some videos look really cool – they’ve got cool effects, the band is performing at a cool location, or some cool camera move is employed. Some videos have an abundance of celebrity cameos (ie. Puff Daddy and Jay-Z) And some videos use imagery that matches the music perfectly…so perfectly that I couldn’t imagine any other way the video would like.

An example is MJ’s Smooth Criminal. Perhaps it’s because I grew up LOVING this video, but I cannot come up with any other idea or concept for how this video would look otherwise. Another example is Sabotage which is also one of my favorites.

I saw the video for RHCP’s Otherside last night and was reminded of how insanely awesome it is. It strikes a chord with me because I had a directing instructor who LOVED German Expressionist films. I had to watch films like The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and M so a video like Otherside, and my ability to recognize the influence behind it, proves that film school works! I had always been a fan of that track and seeing that video again reminded me that this should be included in my ever-growing list of perfect videos. Check it out.
